Does the New Balance 1080v15 run true to size? Should you size up?

We checked, on 8,016 real feet. We worked out the inside measurements of the New Balance 1080v15 Men's / Unisex: the length, the width, and the forefoot volume (ball girth). Then we virtually fitted 8,016 real feet from our earlier in-store 3D foot scanners, the way a runner shopping online would: New Balance's size chart for length, and New Balance's width chart for the width.

Does the New Balance 1080v15 run true to size?

Yes, for 75% of feet, if you follow New Balance's size guidance online. Here, true to size means the size New Balance's guidance gives you is less than a full size away from the size that fits best, with enough toe room and enough forefoot volume.

New Balance did a very good job with its online size guidance. New Balance's website lists the foot length for every size and the foot width for every width option, and offers a printable sheet for measuring your feet at home. That makes it easy for online shoppers to figure out which width they need, not just which size.

Should you size up or down in the New Balance 1080v15?

New Balance's length chart and width chart are shared across its shoes, but how well the charts work depends on the model. Here is where every foot landed in the 1080v15 when we followed those charts.

Share of 8,016 feet. Each foot is counted once.

  • Right size from the size chart: 75% of feet got a size and a width that fit both their foot length and their forefoot volume. New Balance's online size guidance, including its width chart, worked well for this group in the 1080v15.
  • Sized up for more forefoot volume: For 1% of feet, even the extra wide version had too little forefoot volume at the size the chart gave. Going up a size was the only way to get more forefoot volume, and the bigger size also adds length in front of the toes.
  • Sized up for toe room only: 24% of feet fit the forefoot volume once they had the right width, but the length the chart gave left their toes very little room. New Balance's chart puts feet up to 270 mm long in a US 9, and the inside of the US 9 1080v15 is about 273.5 mm long, so a 270 mm foot has about 3.5 mm of room in front of the toes. If your foot is near the long end of your size, consider half a size or a full size up.
  • Sized down for less forefoot volume: Almost no feet landed here: 19 of 8,016, which rounds to 0%. With a narrow version available, almost every foot that needed less forefoot volume could fix the fit with the narrow width instead of a smaller size.

How we measured

We measured the 1080v15 in all four widths and virtually fitted 8,016 real feet from our earlier in-store 3D foot scanners. Out of 17,311 foot scans, those 8,016 feet fall in the 1080v15's size range (US men's 7 to 16). For every foot, we followed New Balance's size guidance online: the length chart, plus the width chart. A difference of a full size or more between New Balance's size and the size that fits best counts as a miss. These numbers show how the 1080v15 fits a large group of feet, not how the shoe feels on a run.
