Do the Blundstone Classics boots run true to size? Should you size up?

We checked, on 16,874 real feet. We worked out the inside measurements of the Blundstone Classics boots: the length, the width, and the forefoot volume (ball girth). Then we virtually fitted 16,874 real feet from our earlier in-store 3D foot scanners, the way someone shopping online would: Blundstone's size chart for length.

Do the Blundstone Classics boots run true to size?

For 4 in 10 feet. If you follow Blundstone's size guidance online, the Classics boots fit true to size for 40% of feet. Here, true to size means the size Blundstone's online guidance gives you is less than a full size away from the size that fits best, with enough toe room and enough forefoot volume.

Blundstone's US product pages say the boots "run true to size," but Blundstone's US size guide only converts US sizes to the AU/UK size stamped on the boot and lists no foot lengths. For our fittings, we used the foot lengths Blundstone publishes on its Australian site. Blundstone half sizes work differently from most brands: Blundstone's chart lists the same foot length for a half size as for the whole size below it, so a half size up adds forefoot volume, not length. Blundstone's US size guide suggests a half size up for a wider fit. The Classics boots come in one width, so the size and the footbeds are the only ways to change the forefoot volume. In our fittings, most of the misses came from feet that needed less forefoot volume.

Should you size up or down in the Blundstone Classics boots?

The Blundstone Classics boots fit very similar to the Blundstone Originals in forefoot volume, so the results are the same as the Originals boots'. Blundstone says the Classics have "a wider fit compared to our Originals Series," and when the writer of this page tried both on, the Classics felt a little roomier than the Originals in the same size, about the same difference as switching to a slightly thinner sock, but not enough to change the size. The Classics also come with "an extra set of footbeds for a customized fit." Putting the extra footbed in or leaving it out changes the fit by a smaller step than a half size, so the Classics boots give finer control over the fit than half sizes alone. Here is where every foot landed in the Classics boots when we followed Blundstone's size chart.

Share of 16,874 feet. Each foot is counted once.

  • Right size from the size chart: 40% of feet got a size that fit both their foot length and their forefoot volume. Blundstone's size chart worked well for this group in the Classics boots.
  • Sized up for more forefoot volume: For 9% of feet, the Classics boots had too little forefoot volume at the size the chart gave. The Classics boots have no wide version, so a bigger size was the only way to get more forefoot volume. A Blundstone half size up adds forefoot volume without adding length.
  • Sized up for toe room only: Almost no feet landed here: 1 of 16,874, which rounds to 0%. Blundstone's size chart leaves almost every foot enough room in front of the toes in the Classics boots.
  • Sized down for less forefoot volume: For 51% of feet, the Classics boots had too much forefoot volume at the size the chart gave. The Classics boots have no narrow version, so a smaller size or the extra footbed were the ways to get less forefoot volume. A smaller size also leaves less room in front of the toes.

How we measured

We measured the Classics boots, which come in one width and in unisex sizes, and virtually fitted 16,874 real feet from our earlier in-store 3D foot scanners. Out of 17,311 foot scans, those 16,874 feet fall in the size range of the Classics boots (US men's 4 to 14). For every foot, we followed Blundstone's size guidance: the length chart, using the foot lengths from Blundstone's Australian site, in the standard width. We fitted the Classics boots without the extra footbed. A difference of a full size or more between Blundstone's size and the size that fits best counts as a miss. These numbers show how the Classics boots fit a large group of feet, not how the boots feel on your feet.
