Do the Blundstone Originals boots run true to size? Should you size up?
We checked, on 16,874 real feet. We worked out the inside measurements of the Blundstone Originals boots: the length, the width, and the forefoot volume (ball girth). Then we virtually fitted 16,874 real feet from our earlier in-store 3D foot scanners, the way someone shopping online would: Blundstone's size chart for length.
Blundstone size guide score
40/100
Blundstone's size guidance online gave the right size for 40% of 16,874 feet.
Do the Blundstone Originals boots run true to size?
For 4 in 10 feet. If you follow Blundstone's size guidance online, the Originals boots fit true to size for 40% of feet. Here, true to size means the size Blundstone's online guidance gives you is less than a full size away from the size that fits best, with enough toe room and enough forefoot volume.
Blundstone's US product pages say the boots "run true to size," but Blundstone's US size guide only converts US sizes to the AU/UK size stamped on the boot and lists no foot lengths. For our fittings, we used the foot lengths Blundstone publishes on its Australian site. Blundstone half sizes work differently from most brands: Blundstone's chart lists the same foot length for a half size as for the whole size below it, so a half size up adds forefoot volume, not length. Blundstone's US size guide suggests a half size up for a wider fit. The Originals boots come in one width, so the size is the only way to change the forefoot volume. In our fittings, most of the misses came from feet that needed less forefoot volume.
Should you size up or down in the Blundstone Originals boots?
The Blundstone Originals boots fit very similar to the Blundstone Classics in forefoot volume, so the results are the same as the Classics boots'. Here is where every foot landed in the Originals boots when we followed Blundstone's size chart.
Following Blundstone's size guidance online
- Right size from the size chart40%
- Sized up for more forefoot volume9%
- Sized up for toe room only0%
- Sized down for less forefoot volume51%
Share of 16,874 feet. Each foot is counted once.
- Right size from the size chart: 40% of feet got a size that fit both their foot length and their forefoot volume. Blundstone's size chart worked well for this group in the Originals boots.
- Sized up for more forefoot volume: For 9% of feet, the Originals boots had too little forefoot volume at the size the chart gave. The Originals boots have no wide version, so a bigger size was the only way to get more forefoot volume. A Blundstone half size up adds forefoot volume without adding length.
- Sized up for toe room only: Almost no feet landed here: 1 of 16,874, which rounds to 0%. Blundstone's size chart leaves almost every foot enough room in front of the toes in the Originals boots.
- Sized down for less forefoot volume: For 51% of feet, the Originals boots had too much forefoot volume at the size the chart gave. The Originals boots have no narrow version, so a smaller size was the only way to get less forefoot volume, with less room in front of the toes.
How we measured
We measured the Originals boots, which come in one width and in unisex sizes, and virtually fitted 16,874 real feet from our earlier in-store 3D foot scanners. Out of 17,311 foot scans, those 16,874 feet fall in the size range of the Originals boots (US men's 4 to 14). For every foot, we followed Blundstone's size guidance: the length chart, using the foot lengths from Blundstone's Australian site, in the standard width. A difference of a full size or more between Blundstone's size and the size that fits best counts as a miss. These numbers show how the Originals boots fit a large group of feet, not how the boots feel on your feet.
